Sounds Quiet Express 5-0 in Finale
Round Rock Manages Just Four Hits in Shutout Loss
NASHVILLE, Tennessee - The Round Rock Express (61-70) concluded the road portion of their 2017 season with a thud, dropping a 5-0 decision against the Nashville Sounds (64-68) on Sunday night at First Tennessee Park.
Round Rock RHP Anthony Bass (3-4, 4.18) gave up all five Sounds runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings. The righty struck out seven and walked just one in the losing effort. Nashville RHP Ben Bracewell (5-2, 4.84) tossed a gem, earning the win after blanking the E-Train on three hits and two walks in seven innings.
The Sounds wasted little time jumping on the scoreboard. In the bottom of the first, C Josh Phegley and SS Yairo Munoz teamed up for back-to-back one-out singles. 3B Joey Wendle followed up with an RBI single to put his team on the board. LF Matt McBride then extended the lead to 3-0 with a two-run double to left field.
Nashville tacked on two more runs in the third. Munoz notched a one-out single before 1B Chris Carter stepped to the plate and blasted a two-run homer, pushing the gap to 5-0.
Offensively, Round Rock managed just four hits in the loss with only two baserunners advanced into scoring position. CF Drew Stubbs opened the contest with a single before moving to second on a throwing error by Munoz on the play. The E-Train then went 26 plate appearances without pushing another runner past first base. RF Preston Beck opened the eighth with a single then moved to second on a Stubbs walk, but was unable to advance any further.
The Express now return home to a soggy Dell Diamond to open a four-game homestand against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. Round Rock RHP Clayton Blackburn (6-2, 4.71) is scheduled to face Colorado Springs RHP Brandon Woodruff (6-5, 4.30). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
