Redbirds Flit Past I-Cubs

MEMPHIS, TN - The Iowa Cubs (65-68) surrendered an early lead and were the victims of a walk off as the Memphis Redbirds (87-48) won 4-3, Monday at AutoZone Park. Iowa has now dropped three-straight to the Redbirds.

Iowa took the first lead on a Jacob Hannemann homer in the second, his fourth long ball of the year. The edge held until the fifth when a Breyvic Valera RBI triple tied the game. Memphis would take a 2-3 lead in the sixth on a home run from Tyler O'Neill, but the advantage didn't hold. Iowa knotted the game in the top of the seventh, only to relinquish the lead once again in the bottom of the frame.

The score remained until the ninth when the I-Cubs rallied, scoring the tying run on an RBI double from Taylor Davis. Memphis fought back, collecting three consecutive hits with one out to take the walk-off win. Valera brought in the winning run with a single, netting his third RBI of the game.

Jen-Ho Tseng gave the I-Cubs five strong innings, allowing one run on five hits, walking none and fanning two. Justin Grimm, on major league rehab, David Garner and Matt Carasiti each gave up a run out of the bullpen, with Carasiti falling to 1-3 on the season with the loss.

Iowa out-hit Memphis 13-10, despite taking the loss. Addison Russell, playing his first rehab game with Iowa, doubled on the first pitch he saw. He went 1-for-3 with a strikeout. Davis went 3-for-4, while John Andreoli and Chris Dominguez each tabbed two hits.

Iowa and Memphis meet again at AutoZone Park tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. CT. Follow the action on AM 940 or www.iowacubs.com .
