Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE â The Nashville Sounds defeated the Sacramento River Cats, 5-3, on Thursday night at Greer Stadium to improve to 21-10 on the year (14-5 at home).
Sacramento took an early 2-0 advantage in the top of the second inning. River Cats shortstop Bobby Crosby lined a double into left-center field that would score Adam Melhuse and Mike Rose.
The Sounds cut the lead in half in the third when Tike Redman singled home Dave Doster. Nashville took the lead for good in the fourth with a two-out, two-run rally. Right fielder J.J. Davis doubled to plate Mike Gulan to tie the game at two apiece. Sounds catcher Humberto Cota followed by slapping a shot through the legs of River Cats first baseman Dave McCarty. Gulan scored on the error and the Sounds took the lead 3-2.
Davis (2-for-4, 2 RBI) would add to the lead in the sixth when he blasted his third home run of the season, a solo shot down the left-field line. Nashville capped their scoring in the seventh when Tike Redman (3-for-4) stole third (his PCL-leading 16th theft in 16 attempts) and scored on catcher Mike Rose's throwing error.
Sacramento added a run in the ninth off of Sounds closer Mark Corey, who picked up his ninth save of the season.
Vogelsong (5-2) picked up the win for Nashville after allowing two runs and striking out five in 5.0 innings of work. River Cats starter Justin Duchscherer (2-1) took his first loss of the young season after allowing four runs in six frames.
The teams will conclude the homestand tomorrow evening with a doubleheader necessitated by Wednesday's rainout.
The first game will begin at 5:00 p.m. Nashville right-hander John Wasdin (3-0) will get the start in the opener and face Sacramento right-hander Aaron Harang (5-1). Right-hander Nelson Figueroa (2-1) gets the nod for the Sounds in the nightcap. He is scheduled to face right-hander Rich Harden (2-1), one of the Oakland Athletics' top prospects.
The first 2,000 fans to enter Greer Stadium for the twinbill receive a complimentary set of Nashville Sounds baseball cards, sponsored by Academy Sports & Outdoors.
