Seattle Sounders News Release

The Seattle Sounders announced today they will face Chivas USA at Qwest Field on July 18th in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Kick-off for the match is at 7:30 PM.

Tickets for the match are $15 general admission and $20 for reserved seating and go on sale through SeattleSounders.net to the general public at 10am on Monday July 1st. Sounders season ticket holders can purchase their seats in advance by calling the Sounders office at 206-622-3415.

The match is also being offered as part of a three match summer ticket special that includes tickets to the July 18th Open Cup match, the July 23rd special exhibition against Preston North End and the August 11th regular season match against the Minnesota Thunder for $40 reserved seating and $30 general admission.

The winner of the Open Cup match will advance to the quarter finals of the tournament.

This is the first time that the Sounders and Chivas USA have met in anything other than an exhibition match. Chivas USA defeated the Sounders 3-1 in a friendly meeting between the sides on June 2nd at Qwest Field. The match was part of the compensation for the transfer of forward Maykel Galindo from the Sounders to Chivas USA during the off-season.

The Sounders have defeated Banat Arsenal from Arizona and the Portland Timbers in the first two rounds of the single elimination tournament. Chivas USA will play their first match of the competition against the Sounders.

Seattle upset the San Jose Earthquakes in the third round of the 2003 tournament to reach the quarter finals where they lost to the LA Galaxy at Qwest Field. Their best ever finish in the cup was a semifinal spot in 1995.

Chivas USA was the victim of one of the biggest upsets in US Open Cup history last year when they lost to Roma FC in a third round match. Their best ever finish was in 2005, the first year of their existence, when they reached the fourth round and lost 5-2 to the LA Galaxy.

The winner of the match will play the winner of the Colorado Rapids (MLS) and California Victory (USL First Division) match in early August. The Sounders have bid to host the match if they advance.

Coverage of the Chivas USA match will be available through USLLive.com.
