July 22, 2021 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Seattle Sounders FC News Release
SEATTLE, WASH. - Following the first loss of the season on Sunday, Sounders FC (8-1-5, 29 points) continues its two-match road stretch on Thursday evening with the club's first-ever visit to Q2 Stadium to face expansion side Austin FC (6:30 p.m. PT / ESPN, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM). The two sides previously played to a scoreless draw on May 30 at Lumen Field.
Sounders FC today announced that it has signed Tacoma Defiance players Samuel Adeniran, Juan Alvarez, Obed Vargas and Alex Villanueva to Short-Term Agreements, making them available for the club's match tonight in Austin. International callups, injuries and disciplinary suspensions to players on Seattle's roster have made the club eligible for Extreme Hardship. As a result, the Rave Green have signed the four players from the club's USL Championship affiliate to short-term loans, making them eligible tonight.
Sunday's loss at Minnesota snapped a league-record 13-match unbeaten streak (8-0-5) to start a season. The run also tied the longest in club history at any point in a single season, matching the franchise record set in 2017, as well as tying the ninth-longest unbeaten streak contained within a single season in league history.
Thursday's match is being broadcast nationally on ESPN, featuring Jon Champion and Taylor Twellman on the call. Sports Radio 950 KJR is carrying tonight's fixture on the radio, with commentators Keith Costigan and Kasey Keller, in addition to Jackson Felts, Pete Fewing and Danny Jackson providing pre-match, halftime and post-match coverage. El Rey 1360 AM is broadcasting the match in Spanish, featuring Zuper Mario Rodriguez, Felipe Maqueda, Carlos Tapia and Marlo Vilela on the call.
Austin FC (3-6-4, 13 points) currently sits 10th in the Western Conference in its inaugural season and is 1-1-2 at home since opening Q2 Stadium. Sounders FC returns home Sunday, July 25 for a matchup between two of the top teams in the Western Conference, hosting Sporting Kansas City at Lumen Field (6:00 p.m. PT / JOEtv, Prime Video, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM).
