Seattle Sounders FC News Release
SEATTLE, WASH - After falling 2-0 to FC Dallas over the weekend, Seattle Sounders FC begins its 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup campaign tonight against the San Jose Earthquakes in the Round of 32 at Starfire Stadium (7:00 p.m. PT / ESPN+). Sounders FC is 23-6-4 (19-2-1 at home) all-time in U.S. Open Cup play, a domestic knockout tournament that Seattle has won four times since joining MLS in 2009 (2009, 2010, 2011, 2014). Should the Rave Green advance past San Jose, the team's Round of 16 opponent and location will be determined via a draw following the Round of 32.
Seattle is no stranger to the Earthquakes, with the two teams facing off 35 times in the MLS regular season. Seattle holds a 15-12-8 advantage in those contests, including a 4-3 loss on April 23 at PayPal Park. In Open Cup play, the two sides have battled to a 1-1-1 record, most recently playing in the Quarterfinals of the 2017 tournament, a 2-1 win for San Jose.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup - the oldest soccer competition in the United States and the third-longest domestic cup competition globally - is open to all United States Soccer Federation (USSF) affiliated teams. With its four Open Cup titles, Sounders FC is tied with the Chicago Fire for the most titles among MLS clubs. Maccabi Los Angeles and Bethlehem Steel FC hold the record with five wins apiece, but neither club is active any longer. In 2011, Sounders FC became the first team since 1968 to win three consecutive Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup championships. The tournament was suspended from 2020-2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Following the midweek action, Brian Schmetzer's side returns to MLS play against Minnesota United FC in a nationally-televised match at Lumen Field (1:00 p.m. PT / ESPN, 93.3 KJR FM, El Rey 1360 AM).
