Tacoma Defiance News Release
TUKWILA, WASH. - Seattle Sounders FC 2 (3-8-4, 13 points) fell by a score of 2-0 to Swope Park Rangers (5-7-2, 17 points) on Sunday evening at Starfire Stadium. The loss ends S2's two-match winning streak after earning victories against rival sides Whitecaps FC 2 and Portland Timbers 2 earlier this month. Next up, S2 visits Sacramento Republic FC on Saturday, July 2 (8:00 p.m. PT / Live-streamed on SoundersFC.com) for the third matchup between the two sides this season. Sacramento won the previous meetings 1-0 and 2-0.
Both teams were held scoreless in the first half, with Seattle forward Andy Craven sailing a shot attempt high in the 11th minute for the only dangerous chance of the first 45 minutes. In the second half, the visiting side began to seize control, but Brandon John's sliding block in the 55th minute and goalkeeper Charlie Lyon's diving save a minute later kept the score deadlocked at 0-0.
In the 65th minute, SPR broke through when forward Kris Tyrpak found open space above Seattle's area before driving a left-footed shot past a diving Lyon. The visitors added another in the 88th minute when Mark Anthony Gonzalez capitalized on a turnover in Seattle's half of the field before striking the ball in the left side of the net.
Craven's cross from left flank was blocked and his follow-up shot landed into the side-netting in the 82nd minute, while defender Michael Nelson's last-gasped shot was collected by goalkeeper Jon Kempin, as Swope Park held S2 scoreless for the first time in five matches.
S2 visits Sacramento Republic FC on Saturday, July 2 for an evening contest at Bonney Field (8:00 p.m. PT / Live-streamed on SoundersFC.com). All information on the S2 Flex Plan, season tickets, group tickets or single-match options, can be found via: www.SoundersFC.com/S2/Tickets.
