Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, CT - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, have announced the additions of John Sullo and Paul Camelio as the team's new athletic trainer and equipment manager.
Sullo, who will turn 27 next month, replaces Garrett Timms who was named the Islanders strength and conditioning coach last week. The Branford, Connecticut native was the athletic trainer for the United Hockey League's Adirondack Frostbite and earned a nod as an athletic trainer for that league's all-star game last season. Sullo worked as an athletic trainer for the UHL's Port Huron Beacons in 2002-03 and New Haven Knights in 2001-02. He also doubled as Port Huron's equipment manager in 2002-03 and worked a semester at Boston University in 2004. Sullo graduated from Southern Connecticut State University with a degree in Exercise Science and Athletic Training in 2001.
"John's qualifications speak for themselves," said Sound Tigers head coach Dave Baseggio. "He comes highly recommended by Marc Potvin in Adirondack and a number of other people."
Paul Camelio, 30, replaces his brother Jeff who recently joined the equipment staff of the NHL's Nashville Predators. The Rochester, New York native was the equipment manager for the ECHL's Pee Dee Pride in Florence, South Carolina last season working with newly-named Islanders assistant coach Jack Capuano. Camelio worked for the AHL's Lowell Lock Monsters in 2003-04, the ECHL's Roanoke Express from 1999 through 2003, the UHL's Mohawk Valley Prowlers in Utica, New York in 1998-99 and the Central Hockey League's Oklahoma City Blazers from 1996 through 1998. He also served as an assistant equipment manager for the AHL's Binghamton Rangers from 1993 through 1995 and the AHL's Rochester Americans from 1989 through 1993. Camelio worked in Binghamton while studying for a degree in Liberal Arts at Broome Community College, which he received in 1995.
"Paul certainly comes from a good family," said Baseggio. "I've known him for a long time, and he's not only capable of doing the job, but he's also a quality person."
The Sound Tigers will celebrate their fifth anniversary in Bridgeport as the top affiliate of the Islanders in 2005-06. They will open the regular season with the first of four straight road games when they visit the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Wednesday, October 5th. Their first home games at Bridgeport's Arena at Harbor Yard will be Saturday and Sunday, October 22nd and 23rd when they host the Portland Pirates and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
