Sound Tigers Beat Binghamton 5-0 In Game Three

BRIDGEPORT, CT – The American Hockey League's 2001-02 Regular Season Champion and Eastern Conference Playoff Champion Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, beat the Binghamton Senators 5-0 at home Wednesday. With the win, the Sound Tigers cut Binghamton's lead in their best-of-seven, Eastern Conference Semi-Final series to two games to one. The teams combined for 18 power plays and 225 minutes in penalties in the game including eight advantages and 192 penalty minutes in the third period.

The Sound Tigers took a 1-0 lead on Martin Chabada's third goal of the playoffs, :15 into a power play, with 2:14 left in the first period on assists from Trent Hunter and Eric Manlow. They then doubled their lead to 2-0 on Hunter's team-leading sixth goal of the postseason with 1:18 left in the second period on an assist from Manlow.

Sven Butenschon upped the lead to 3-0 with his third goal of the playoffs, also his third on the power play this postseason, 1:16 into the third period. Brandon Smith and Jeremy Adduono assisted on the goal which was scored :19 the advantage.

Daniel Tkaczuk's third goal of the playoffs, his team-leading ninth postseason point, made it 4-0 Sound Tigers at the 4:02 mark with Jeff Hamilton and Adduono notching assists. Hamilton then made it 5-0 with his third goal of the playoffs, a five-on-three power-play marker, off assists from Tkaczuk and Butenschon with 9:38 left to play.

The majority of penalties were called following a melee with 2:13 left in the game which was also the point at which Binghamton replaced starting Goaltender Ray Emery with Mathieu Chouinard. Emery made 33 saves while Chouinard neither faced a shot nor allowed a goal.

The Sound Tigers were 3 for 10 on the power play and 8 for 8 on the penalty kill. They also had a 38-29 shots on goal advantage. Goaltender Rick DiPietro made 29 saves for his first win and first shutout of the postseason. DiPietro, who led the AHL with three playoff shutouts last year, was the first star of the game. Hunter was the second star. Chabada was the third star.

The series will resume will with game four Friday at 7:35 p.m. at Bridgeport's Arena at Harbor Yard. It will shift back to Binghamton for game five Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Game six, if necessary, will be next Monday in Bridgeport at 7:05 p.m. Game seven, if necessary, will be next Tuesday in Binghamton at 7:05 p.m. All Sound Tigers' games are broadcast live on "News/Talk 960" WELI-AM and at www.soundtigers.com.
