Sound set to hit home court

November 23, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Strong Island Sound News Release

Professional basketball is back on ‘the island'. The American Basketball Association welcomes its new expansion team for the 2005-2006 season to Long Island, New York. The Strong Island Sound will bring back the excitement of the original ABA from the 1960s and 1970s. The new version of the upstart league has the same red, white, and blue basketball to go along with its own unique rules such as the 3D Light and the 3-10 Overtime rule.

Minor league sports in the New-York Metropolitan area have brought excitement since local teams started to arrive in 1999. Teams such as the Staten Island Yankees, Brooklyn Cyclones, and Long Island Ducks have given the people of New York an affordable alternative to major league baseball. All three of these teams have been a huge success. They have solid attendance, great marketing value, and all have won at least one league championship. The Strong Island Sound would like to promote the same community-based, family-friendly atmosphere and affordable option to the fans of New York for the sport of basketball.

Darren Cioffi, Co-Owner and General Manager of the Strong Island Sound, is working with Suffolk County to have a brand new arena built in Yaphank for the team. For their inaugural season, the Sound have home games scheduled at St. Joseph's College in Patchogue and Suffolk Community College in Selden. The Sound also have games scheduled at local high schools to promote the team to students and have them work as interns at the game.

The team would like to begin a relationship with the local media to provide access to the team for the fans. Please let us know if you are interested.

The time is now to join the newest professional team in the area. The Strong Island Sound tip off in November. Their first home game is on Friday November 25, 2005 at 7 PM at St. Joseph's College. They are facing the Harlem StrongDogs, who are sure to become their first geographic rival. On Saturday November 26th, the Strong face the Rochester Razorsharks at 7 PM at St. Joseph's College. Single game and ticket packages can be purchased at the team's official web site, www.strongislandsound.com . Tickets can also be purchased the evening of the game at the venue. Tickets are $12.00 at the door. Special ticket price of $9.00 with any college ID. Further information concerning the team and the American Basketball Association in general can be obtained via the leagues official web site www.abalive.com .

We are looking forward to enjoying a successful first season on and off the court.

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams. For information on professional minor leagues, please see OSC's basketball section.
