Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Adelanto, CA - Angelo Songco's 11th-inning homer and Matt Magill's two scoreless innings of relief, helped the Quakes overcome a blown nine-run lead, as Rancho Cucamonga finally held on for a 12-11 victory over the High Desert Mavericks in Tuesday's series-opener at Mavericks Stadium.
Songco untied the game with an opposite-field solo homer to left-center field against High Desert reliever Austin Hudson (4-5), putting the Quakes in front to stay at 12-11.
With the Quakes short on bullpen arms, Magill (10-5) was called upon to make his first true relief appearance of the year, responding with a scoreless tenth and a scoreless 11th in securing his tenth win of the year.
With a nine-run advantage and nine outs to go, the Quakes looked as if they would run away with Tuesday's game, taking an 11-2 lead to the bottom of the seventh.
Quakes' starter Red Patterson had pitched well over the first six innings, but ran into trouble in the seventh. Patterson surrendered a solo homer to Matt Cerione to open the inning, making it 11-3. A two-out single from Jamie McOwen brought home another run, before Steven Proscia connected for a grand slam, bringing the Mavs to within three runs at 11-8.
The Mavs picked up a run in the eighth and then got two in the ninth, thanks to a two-out, two-run homer off the bat of Proscia, his second of the night and 11th of the year, evening the game at 11-11.
The Quakes got huge offensive games from Songco, who finished with three hits, three RBIs and four runs scored, as well as Blake Smith, who collected four hits and drove in three.
Tuesday's game also had some additional drama, as both dugouts emptied during an eighth-inning scuffle that involved Cerione and Rancho's Steve Smith and Jessie Mier. Everyone was sent back to their respective dugouts with only those three players being ejected from the game.
Rancho (37-27, 75-59) faces High Desert again on Wednesday, in the second game of the three-game series and game two of the Quakes' final seven-game road trip of the regular season. Andres Santiago (7-5) takes on Taylor Stanton (3-4) at 7:05pm.
The Quakes open the 2011 Playoffs on Saturday, September 10th, taking on either Inland Empire or Lake Elsinore in the South Division Finals. Saturday, September 10th will feature $1 Hot Dogs, as everyone can enjoy dollar dogs throughout the night. Game time is 7:05pm.
