Somerset Patriots Move to Liberty Division of Atlantic League

Bridgewater, NJ- The Atlantic League of Professional Baseball has announced that the Somerset Patriots will be moving to the Liberty Division effective for the 2014 season.

The Liberty Division will now be made up of the Somerset Patriots, Long Island Ducks, Camden Riversharks, and Bridgeport Bluefish.

The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs will make the move to the Freedom Division and join the Sugar Land Skeeters, Lancaster Barnstormers, and York Revolution.

"This division alignment prepares the Atlantic League for the creation of the Western Division as teams are added in Texas, and other markets, over the next few years," said Atlantic League President, Peter Kirk. "It will also create a well-balanced travel schedule and continue to enhance fun, local rivalries amongst the four Liberty Division teams which are within close proximity of one another."

This is the third division the Somerset Patriots will represent in their 16-year history in the Atlantic League. The Patriots were part of the South Division when the Atlantic League was originally broken into two divisions based on the teams' geographic locations from 2000-2007. The Patriots have been in the Freedom Division since the divisions were realigned and renamed in 2008.

Over their history, the Somerset Patriots have won five South Division Championships and three Freedom Division Championships on their way to a record five Atlantic League Championships.

The Atlantic League continues to be the only professional baseball league in an active expansion mode. Over the next few years the League plans to expand from eight to twelve teams, which will join the existing teams in the major metropolitan markets of New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington D.C. and Houston.
