Hertha Berlin come away with a rousing victory at Forward Madison thanks to some clean play in front of goal.The match began with steady control from Berlin through Per Skjelbred and and Maurice Covic, before Salomon Kalou took control from the left. The Ivorian's play lead to multiple chances throughout the match, and resulted in the first goal as he set up Javairo Dilrosun for a perfect curler past a diving Ryan Coulter in the 25th minute.
The Flamingos were able to generate a few chances down the right side, as Christian Diaz came close to playing in Zaire Bartley, Brian Bement, and Paulo Jr. The closest Forward Madison came to scoring came through Paulo Jr., who nearly found himself in front of goal and blocked a pass from goalie Thomas Smarsch that he immediately had to catch. After the break, the second goal came courtesy of an opportunistic Fabian Lustenberger, who capitalized on a misplayed save from Ryan Coulter just into stoppage time.
The second half subs didn't change the score line but did play a much more open game that resulted in more chances for the 'Mingos in addition to the Berliners. The first goal came courtesy of Davie Selke penalty, who sent Brandon Barnes the wrong way after Maximilian Mittelstadt drew Ally Hamis into a foul. The second goal came from Marko Grujic, who unleashed an unstoppable shot past Brandon Barnes to seal the score. As the second half progressed, Forward Madison introduced three guest players in Alex Glavas, George Morris, and Dani Morillo, with the latter two coming from Green Bay Voyageurs, a collegiate summer team and owned by Big Top Sports, which owns Forward Madison as well. In the second half, the biggest chances for Madison came from Paulo Jr. and J.C. Banks, which were among multiple players to force goalie Thomas Smarsch to making saves.
In the end, it was a special night at Breese Stevens Field that brought out a record crowd of 4,731 fans on a Friday night in which the weather held off.
