Amarillo Sod Poodles News Release

San Antonio, Texas - The Sod Poodles dropped game three of the six-game series in San Antonio 4-3 on Thursday night. Amarillo took an early lead and held onto it until the bottom of the eighth inning before ultimately falling behind 2-1 in the current series.

The Missions scored first, stringing together a pair of two-out singles with a walk in between against Amarillo starter Deyni Olivero in the bottom of the second inning. Their lead was short-lived, however. Roby Enriquez reached on an error to start the top of the third before a walk pushed him into scoring position. Drew Stankiewicz singled, scoring Enriquez to tie things up. Two sac flies in the inning pushed Amarillo out in front by two, a margin they would hold for the majority of the game.

Olivero would hold the Missions to just two more hits over his final four innings of work en route to picking up his first quality start in Double-A. The right-hander finished the game going a season-high six innings and allowed just five total hits and the one earned run, continuing his string of good starts.

The Missions relievers also held the Sod Poodles' daunting lineup in check. After taking the lead in the third, Amarillo would muster just one hit from the fourth inning until the eighth. Andy Yerzy doubled with two outs in the fourth before the next nine would be retired in order. Stankiewicz broke that streak with a two-out walk in the seventh inning. The next Sod Poodles hit came off the bat of Eduardo Diaz with a single in the eighth. Diaz stole second to put himself in scoring position with two outs but was left stranded.

Jeff Bain relieved Olivero and entered the game having surrendered just two earned runs total over his last 14 outings. Bain pitched a scoreless seventh, stranding one runner who reached on a single. Bain was back out for the eighth and allowed a one-out double before inducing a fly-out. On a 2-2 count, the Missions tied the game with a home run, just the first home run given up by Bain since May 19th.

With the momentum swinging in San Antonio's favor, the Soddies saw their first two batters of the ninth sent back to the dugout. Yerzy drew a two-out walk to keep the inning alive. A dropped third strikeout beat out by Stankiewicz kept the inning alive, turning the lineup to Corbin Carroll. The D-backs' No. 1 rated prospect flew out, keeping the potential go-ahead run stranded in scoring position.

Liu Fuenmayor replaced Bain in the bottom of the eighth and was back out for the ninth. A leadoff single spelled trouble for the Sod Poodles. A sac bunt moved the runner into scoring position. Amarillo started to play the numbers game. An intentional walk provided a force-out situation. That was taken away with a balk, moving both into scoring position. The second intentional walk loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth. The Missions got the job done with a sac fly to center field, scoring the runner on third and walking off the Sod Poodles.

The Sod Poodles and Missions continue their series with game four scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch tomorrow, June 76 from Nelson Wolff Stadium. Amarillo will throw RHP Brandon Pfaadt (3-4, 4.60 ERA) getting the start for the Soddies. Pfaadt leads the org in strikeouts so far in 2022, racking up 76 punchouts in his first 11 starts.
