Amarillo Sod Poodles News Release

The Amarillo Sod Poodles (30-31) evened the series against the San Antonio Missions (32-27) at two wins apiece with a 5-3 victory on Friday night at Nelson Wolff Stadium in San Antonio.

RHP Brandon Pfaadt earned the start for the Sod Poodles after allowing seven earned runs his last time out. He bounced back in a big way and was boosted by a strong offensive showing tonight, earning the win as Amarillo out-hit San Antonio 11-6.

The game started slowly, going scoreless with just two combined hits through the first three innings. Pfaadt cruised through the start of the game, striking out the side in the 3rd.

Amarillo put four baserunners on through the first four innings, but it was San Antonio that struck first in the bottom of the 4th. The leadoff batter doubled off of Pfaadt and came around to score on an RBI groundout.

The Sod Poodles tied the game in their next opportunity in the top of the 5th. Juan Centeno led off the inning with a triple, and he was immediately scored on an RBI double from Nick Dalesandro. He later stole third with two outs, but the inning ended on a strikeout.

For the third half-inning in a row, San Antonio scored in the bottom of the 5th to retake the lead. Jorge Ona hit a solo home run off of Pfaadt to make it 2-1, and Pfaadt responded by striking out the final two batters to end the inning.

Pfaadt pitched a scoreless 6th and recorded his fifth quality start of the season, each coming in his last seven outings. He struck out eight Missions over 6.0 IP, tying his second-highest strikeout total this season. He came into this start as the Sod Poodles leader with 76 K, and currently sits atop the Arizona farm system with 84 strikeouts. The Diamondbacks' No. 9 prospect earned his fourth win of the season with a final line of 6.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, and 8 K off of 92 pitches.

The Sod Poodles took the lead for good with a 7th inning that was sprinkled with a bit of Amarillo magic. Centeno led it off with a double, and he advanced to third on a groundout. Roby Enriquez then doubled to score him and tie the game at 2-2. Drew Stankiewicz walked, and Jorge Barrosa drew a two-out walk to load the bases.

Leandro Cedeño strode to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded, but two swinging strikes quickly put him behind in the count. He made contact on the next pitch and put a lazy fly ball into center field, but the center fielder lost the ball and let it drop for a hit. All three of the runners came in to score, and Cedeño took second base with a go-ahead RBI double.

With a new 5-2 lead, Cam Booser entered in relief. He issued a walk to the first batter he faced but set down the next six in a row to bring the game to the 9th. Blake Rogers took the ball in the save situation, and the Missions threatened late.

The leadoff batter cut into the lead with a solo home run. A single and a walk brought the winning run to the plate, but Rogers struck out back-to-back batters to secure the 5-3 W.

The Sod Poodles were led by a 3-for-5 effort from Juan Centeno, two hits from Roby Enriquez and Leandro Cedeño, and Cedeño also provided three RBI. The Sod Poodles went 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position, but the pitching staff struck out 13 and allowed just eight baserunners.

The win tied the series at two wins apiece with two games to play. LHP Blake Walston (2-2, 6.82 ERA) will be on the mound for Amarillo to face San Antonio's Reggie Lawson (1-4, 6.75 ERA). The Sod Poodles now trail the Missions by three games for first place in the Texas League South.

Notes:

I Need a Hero: RHP Brandon Pfaadt earned the win in an excellent performance, striking out eight Missions with zero walks and four hits over 6.0 IP. He allowed just two earned runs en route to his fifth quality start of the season, each coming in his last seven games. On the year, the Diamondbacks' No. 9 prospect is now 4-4 with a 4.45 ERA, and he leads both the Sod Poodles and the entire Arizona farm system with 84 strikeouts. He has been in great control of the strike zone this season and has issued just 11 walks, with none tonight.

Top Gun: RHP Blake Rogers allowed one run to score in the 9th but struck out the final two batters of the game to secure his fourth save of the season. He is now 4-for-4 in save opportunities this year and recorded his 20th appearance of the season. The three-time Sod Poodle is 2-0 this year with a 3.47 ERA and 32 strikeouts.

Three For Juan: Catcher Juan Centeno went 3-for-4 tonight with two runs scored. He finished just one hit away from the cycle with a triple, double and single. The hits were his first in the series, as he was 0-for-8 before tonight's game. He tied his season-high with three hits and recorded his first triple of the season, and first since 2021 with Toledo (AAA, DET).

RBI Machine: With his bases-clearing double in the 7th, Leandro Cedeño recorded his 40th RBI of the season. He sits second on the Sod Poodles and tied for 9th in the Texas League. In his career, this is the fourth individual team that he has recorded at least 40 RBI in a season with. His career-high was 67 RBI in 2021 across A+ and AA in the St. Louis Cardinals organization.

Friday Night Lights: The Sod Poodles played well once the lights came on at Nelson Wolff Stadium on Friday, scoring four runs in the 7th inning. This was just the first time in the series that the Soddies scored a run in the 7th inning or later, snapping a late-inning cold streak dating back to June 12 against Frisco. The win tied the current series at two wins apiece and extended their season series lead to 6-4.
