San Diego Sockers News Release

SAN DIEGO, Calif. The San Diego Sockers traded forward Nino DaSilva and the first pick in the Dallas Sidekicks Dispersal Draft to the St. Louis Steamers for All-Star forward, Steve Butcher. In a separate move, the Sockers reacquired third year defender Kevin Sakuda, who had been selected by the expansion Chicago Storm during the off-season.

"The reason we made the deal is, if Steve Butcher had been in the Dispersal Draft, he would have been the first pick," said head coach, Brian Quinn about the trade.

Butcher, a native of New York, played in 29 games for the Steamers last season, tallying 31 goals and 17 assists. Butcher is a strong forward who plays well with his back to the goal, and has the ability to challenge defenders one-on-one. On top of his skill for the indoor game, Butcher was also an integral part of the U.S. Futsal Team which won the gold medal in the CONCACAF Futsal Tournament this summer. The 6'2" forward is expected to report to the Sockers immediately.

DaSilva in his lone season with San Diego put up 17 goals and eight assists for a total of 25 points in 29 games. The native of Brazil spent the first three years of his indoor career with the Kansas City Comets.

In addition to the trade with the Steamers, San Diego traded the rights for Byron Alvarez to the Chicago Storm in exchange for defender Kevin Sakuda. Sakuda, who spent the off-season playing for the Seattle Sounders of the A-League, will enter his third year in the MISL with the Sockers. The Duke University product has proved to be very durable for San Diego, missing just four games in the last two years. Alvarez was a player on the Sockers' list of protected players, but has never played for San Diego.
