San Diego Sockers News Release

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - After holding off Monterrey the night before, the Sockers were unable complete a sweep of a back-to-back as they fell to the Fury 10-6 Thursday night. It was the first time in five meetings this season that Monterrey has taken a game from San Diego. The Sockers' record dropped to 13-19 as they failed to gain ground on the idle St. Louis Steamers for the last playoff spot.

The Steamers, now 12-17, gained a game earlier in the day when the League reversed a February 12 loss to Monterrey. The Fury were sanctioned for violating League regulations by using ineligible players in four official matches. One of the games the Fury had to forfeit was a 6-3 win in St. Louis Steamers.

Thursday night's game got off to similar start as the Fury struck first with a David Pereyra goal at 9:07 of the first quarter. Marco Lopez then put the Fury up 2-0 with an unassisted goal at 11:29. Thirty-two seconds later, the Sockers returned the favor with Brad Flanagan feeding Paul Wright for a power play goal.

Early into the second period, Octavio Perez assisted a goal by Walter Gomez at 1:28 to give the Fury a two-goal lead. The Sockers came right back with a goal by Wright from Robbie Aristodemo at 3:55. First half scoring ended at 8:56 of the second quarter with Lopez assisting Renato Pereira's goal to put the Fury ahead 4-2.

The Sockers bounced back to even the game at 4-4 with two goals early in the third quarter. Wright assisted Brad Flanagan's first goal with the Sockers at 1:08. Then it was Wright getting one past Fury goalkeeper Aurelio Perez at 5:40 for his third of the game. Monterrey responded with a Gomez goal less than three minutes later at 8:36 to take a 5-4 lead. Mauricio Alegre didn't waste much time in tying the game for a second time with a goal assisted by Kevin Sakuda at 10:35. Monterrey broke the 5-5 tie for good with a 4-0 run started by a Lopez goal at 11:54. Genoni Martinez added to the lead with his first goal at 13:32.

At 3:47 of the fourth quarter, Lopez put in his third goal of the game to give the Fury an 8-5 lead. Martinez continued the run with his second of the night coming off a Lopez assist at 5:31. Paul Dougherty gave San Diego some hope with an unassisted goal at 8:57, but former Socker Gaston Pernia ended any chance of a San Diego comeback with a final Monterrey goal at 12:35.

San Diego has not won consecutive games on the road since December 13 at Dallas and December 28 at Monterrey.

The Sockers will host the defending MISL Champion Baltimore Blast on Saturday, March 20. The last time the teams met in San Diego, the Sockers took the Valentine's Day affair 5-3. The first 2,500 fans to the game receive free Sockers floppy hats. The first 4,000 adults get a free Kohl's gift card.
