San Diego Sockers News Release
The San Diego Sockers lost to the Milwaukee Wave 6-5 in overtime before 5,664 fans at The U.S. Cellular Arena. The game featured a series of lead changes before Wave midfielder Giuliano Oliviero volleyed home the games final score at 3:32 of the overtime period.
Milwaukee struck first at 4:18 of the first quarter when Todd Dusosky finished a pass from Marcelo Fontana to give the Wave a 1-0 advantage. The Sockers responded with the next two tallies of the game, Kevin Legg at 9:19 to even the score at one, and Paul Wright's power play goal at 12:23 gave the Sockers the 2-1 lead. Wright's goal was his seventh of the year, and was a rocket into the upper left corner.
The second quarter of action was scoreless and the Sockers took the one goal lead into the halftime break.
In the third quarter the MISL's leading scorer Greg Howes tied the game back up at 5:06 of the quarter, it was his 18th goal of the 2003-04 season. Less than two minutes later, Sockers' midfielder Mauricio Alegre hit the first of his two goals on the night and the Sockers were back in front, 3-2. Again the Wave had an answer, this time it was Matt Schmidt at 11:09 of the third quarter on an assist from Howes.
The Wave took their first lead since the first quarter ten seconds into the fourth with Todd Dusosky's second goal of the evening. Alegre notched his second at 4:23 of the fourth on an assist from Nino DaSilva. Indoor soccer veteran Joe Reiniger put the Wave in front at 6:46 of the fourth. Mariano Bollella gave the Sockers a chance with a goal at 11:59 of the fourth and tied the game back up at five.
In the overtime former Wave goalkeeper, and now Sockers' netminder Victor Nogueira made several spectacular saves before Giuliano Oliviero hit the game winner to seal the victory for the Wave. While Nogueira took his seventh loss of the season, Wave keeper Dan Green raised his record to 6-1.
The Sockers return home to face West Division rivals, the Dallas Sidekicks on Sunday January 4th. The kickoff is set for 5 p.m. and the first 3,000 fans will receive Sockers' Thunder Stix. Catch all the action on worldtalkradio.com or ESPN Radio 800.
