Sockers Blasted by Sonora in Playoff Series Opener
March 11, 2016 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL)
San Diego Sockers News Release
The San Diego Sockers fell in Game One of the Pacific Division Final 10-5 against Soles de Sonora in front of 2,220 fans at the Valley View Casino Center.
The Sockers must now defeat Sonora in Mexico on Saturday night and win the "mini-game" to advance to the semifinals.
Eddie Velez gave the Sockers a 1-0 lead just 25 seconds in, but Daniel Lopez scored the first two of his four goals and Franck Tayou smashed home a second quarter hat-trick on his way to a four goal night as Sonora took a 6-1 lead into the break.
The Sockers employed the sixth-attacker for much of the final quarter and gave up two empty-net goals, but were able to fight their way back into the match. Victor Quiroz scored an absolute cracker followed by Nick Perera and Enrique Tovar completing a three goal blitz in the span of 50 seconds to bring the score back to 10-5 and give San Diego momentum heading into Saturday.
"You just got to have a short memory," Goalkeeper Chris Toth said. "The series isn't won over one game so we just got to bounce back and keep doing what we've been doing."
The two sides will close out the series on Saturday at the Centro de Usos Multiples. Kick-off is at 5pm PT and can be seen on www.golivesportscast.com.
