DEL MAR---Kraig Chiles scored a hat trick and Majell Aterado had four assists as the San Diego Sockers defeated Las Vegas Select in the opening round of the US Open for Arena Soccer. A crowd of 1,910 at the Del Mar Arena saw the Sockers convert each of their first three power plays to defeat Las Vegas, an independent team entered into the single elimination national knockout tournament.

Tijuana star Eduardo "El Vaquero" Velez added a pair of goals for San Diego, while Chiky Luna converted a free kick goal and added an assist. The Sockers 19th straight win (counting PASL regular season and playoff games) marked a full calendar year since their last loss and advanced San Diego to the second round of the US Open, where they will take on the Phoenix Monsoon on January 8th in Arizona.

The Sockers next game is a return to PASL regular season action, when they host the rival Anaheim Bolts on January 7th in Del Mar. The Sockers will honor legendary former head coach Ron Newman with a special halftime ceremony during the game.
