PASL Weekly - Week 7/8
December 28, 2011 - Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL) News Release
Sockers, Waza on Top at Midpoint
12/27/11 -  The San Diego Sockers and Detroit Waza lead their respective divisions at the virtual midpoint of the 2011/12 PASL season. San Diego, 5-0, has won 13 in a row dating back a full calendar year. In fact, including the US Open and playoffs, the Sockers will finish 2011 18-0 with a US Open win over Las Vegas Select on Tuesday.
Detroit on the other hand is much newer to success, but is holding a slim lead in the Eastern Division with a 5-1 record.
While four teams have completed at least half their schedule, the Sockers and Waza will see increased action during the final two months of the season. San Diego, in fact, will play eight games in January. On the flip side Detroit had only one scheduled regular season game in December.
Player of the Week
Costea Decu, Detroit Waza
The Count beat out several strong performers to capture the PASL's weekly award. On December 17 Decu scored five goals to lead Detroit to an 8-6 win over the rival Cincinnati Kings. With the scored tied at six, Decu put the team on his shoulders and made a solo end-to-end run that resulted in what proved to be the game winning goal. A little over a minute later he capped the scoring with an insurance goal. Decu is tied for second in the PASL with 12 goals.

Sockers Winning Streak at 13
The San Diego Sockers beat the Tacoma Stars 8-3 on 12/17 in what was probably the most complete game the Sockers have played this season. Aside from a short lull that allowed Tacoma to tie the game at 3-3 early in the third quarter, the Sockers shut out Tacoma the rest of the way, while allowing a season low three goals.
Playoff Races Still in Play
Other than the Phoenix Monsoon, who have lost seven straight games, every team sits within a game of the final playoff spots in their respective divisions.
By Hook or By Crook
The Illinois Piasa's Greg Crook beat the Ohio Vortex twice last weekend with his goalkeeping and his offense. On 12/16, the Vortex were awarded a power play in a skirmish that bloodied Ohio goalkeeper Billy Mehozonek. With Andy Lorei running the sixth attacker, giving Ohio a 6 on 4 advantage, Crook got possession of the ball and chucked it the length of the field into the Vortex empty net to give Illinois a 3-1 lead that resulted in an 8-3 win.
US Open Action
The Sockers will host Las Vegas Select on Tuesday with the winner advancing to the Round of 16.
