Snakes Add Four Forwards

August 25, 2009 - SPHL (SPHL)
Columbus Cottonmouths News Release

The Columbus Cottonmouths have signed four forwards for the upcoming season, including three newcomers. Josh Coyle will rejoin the Snakes and Levi Lind, Brandon Heck and Joey Martini will each come to Columbus for their first professional season.

Coyle joined the Snakes late last season, competing in the final seven regular season games and five playoff games. He recorded six points in 12 total games. Prior to his professional career, the Brooklyn, OH native played four seasons at Union College (2004-2008), picking up 77 points in 104 games.

Lind will join the Snakes for his rookie season after two years with the Melville Millionaires of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, where he registered 90 points and 219 penalty minutes in 92 games. Prior to that, he spent four seasons with the Regina Pats of the Western Hockey League.

"When Coyle came in last season, he wasn't in great playing shape," head coach Jerome Bechard said. "He's had the summer to work out, and I'm excited to see what he can do when he's well-prepared. Levi has a few years of experience in the WHL and at 6-foot-3, he is extremely talented for a big man. He is exactly the power-type forward we're looking for, who can play any style of hockey. I've never had a 6'3" centerman, so he will be a unique addition to our team."

Heck comes to Columbus from Castleton State College. In four seasons with the Castleton Spartans, he picked up 121 points in 104 games. The 5-10 forward hails from Forrestburg, Alberta. Martini comes to the Snakes from Calgary, Alberta. He spent four seasons at the College of St. Scholastica where he picked up 95 points in 109 games.

"These two guys were recommendations from former players," Bechard said. "Heck is from Mat Ponto's hometown. He led his college team in scoring the last four years, so I look for him to be one of our top scorers. Ian Vigier played hockey with Martini's brother. He is a well-rounded player and Vigier knows his family well, which is one of the big reasons I wanted him."

The Snakes now have 11 players on their training camp roster, including seven returnees and four newcomers. Training camp is set to begin Oct. 12. The Snakes open the regular season at home against the Fayetteville FireAntz Friday, Oct. 23 at 7:30 p.m. For more information, contact the Cottonmouths at 706 571 0086 or visit cottonmouths.com.
