Birmingham Barons News Release
BIRMINGHAM, AL â A pitchers duel turned into a landslide victory as the Tennessee Smokies beat the Birmingham Barons 10-2 in game two of a four game series in front of 4,829 fans on Saturday evening at the Hoover Met.
Birmingham starter Mitch Wylie (2-3) and Tennessee starting pitcher Julio Villalon (4-1) were locked in an old fashioned pitchers duel through most of the game before the Smokies broke the game open late. Wylie tossed six innings and gave up just two runs on seven hits but picked up the loss as Villalon went seven innings giving up just one unearned run on four hits to earn the win.
The game broke open in the top of the eighth when Jeff Bajenaru came on in relief and posted his worst outing of the season. In just two innings, Bajenaru surrendered eight earned runs on seven hits, four walks and three wild pitches.
The offensive heroes for the Smokies were catcher Yadier Molina (3-for-4, 4RBI), Skip Schumaker (4-for-6, R) and Papo Bolivar (3-for-5, 2R, RBI).
Game three is tomorrow evening at 6:00 PM as the Barons send out LHP Byeong An (3-1, 3.41) to face LHP Juan Pena (4-3, 3.29).
