Tennessee Smokies News Release
Jackson, TN - The Smokies capitalized on four errors by the Generals, and were able to defeat Jackson 11-6 on Tuesday night at Pringles Park. With the win, the Smokies improve to 28-23 in the second and 71-50 overall.
The Smokies got on the board immediately in the top of the first off RHP Kenn Kasparek (4-4), as Jae-Hoon Ha reached on an error and scored on an RBI double by Ty Wright. Two batters later, Josh VItters drove in Wright on an RBI single to left field, putting Tennessee up 2-0. Smokies LHP Brooks Raley (7-9) surrendered a run back in the bottom frame, as he allowed a one out double to Che-Shien Chiang, who would score on a base hit by Francisco Martinez, making it a 2-1 Smokies lead. A solo home run by Junior Lake in the second increased Tennessee's lead to 3-1, but in the bottom half of the inning, the Generals tagged Raley for two runs on three hits to tie the game up at 3-3.
In the top of the fourth inning, two costly errors by the Generals led to the Smokies scoring four runs, capped off on a sacrifice fly by Vitters, giving Tennessee a 7-3 advantage. Jackson shaved a run off the Smokies lead in the fifth, as Scott Savastano clubbed a solo home run, making it a 7-4 Smokies lead. In the top of the seventh, Vitters walked with one out and was driven in on an RBI double by Steve Clevenger, extending Tennessee's lead to 8-4. The Generals made things interesting in the eighth, as RHP Kevin Rhoderick issued a walk to Jesus Sucre and then surrendered a two-run homer to Savastano, cutting the Smokies lead to 8-6.
In the ninth, the Smokies created some separation by scoring three more runs, this time off RHP Stephen Penny. The scoring was highlighted by a two-run double from Steve Clevenger. Rafael Dolis retired the side in the ninth to preserve the 11-6 win.
The Smokies and Generals will play the second game of their series on Wednesday at 8:05 PM. LHP Eric Jokisch (0-0, 0.00) will make his Smokies debut, and Jackson hands the ball to LHP James Paxton (3-0, 1.85). The Smokies return home to Smokies Park for a series against the Chattanooga Lookouts on Sunday, August 20, at 5:00 PM.
