Knoxville Smokies News Release
Biloxi, Miss. - The Tennessee Smokies (31-24) dropped another high-scoring affair in a 14-10 loss to the Biloxi Shuckers (25-28) Friday night at MGM Park. The two teams combined for 19+ runs and 22+ hits for the second night in a row, but this time the Smokies came out on the short end of a shootout.
The Shuckers used a five-run bottom of the sixth inning to take their first lead of the night, and they never looked back. After the Smokies had taken a 10-6 lead, Sal Frelick cut Biloxi's deficit in half with an RBI single, setting up Felix Valerio's go-ahead three-run homer. The Shuckers' second baseman finished 3-for-4 with eight RBIs.
Anderson Espinoza and Peyton Remy (L, 3-3) combined to allow all 14 earned runs in 7.2 innings, wasting terrific nights from Alexander Canario and Matt Mervis. The Smokies' center fielder finished with three hits and 5 RBIs, including a three-run blast in the fifth. Mervis extended his on-base streak as a Smokie to 21 consecutive games as he homered for the fifth time in the month of June.
The Smokies will play the fifth game of their six-game set with the Shuckers Saturday night at MGM Park in Biloxi, Mississippi. First pitch is set for 7:35 p.m. ET when the Smokies send RHP Javier Assad (2-1, 2.68) to the mound against LHP Nick Bennett (2-4, 5.06). Fans can listen to the action on 99.1 The Sports Animal or by visiting https://www.milb.com/tennessee/fans/audio-listen-live.
Smokies Stadium will host Hope at Bat Night and Henry Rowengartner Night on their next homestand, starting June 21. For tickets, fans can call the box office at (865) 286-2300 or visit smokiesbaseball.com.
