Knoxville Smokies News Release
KODAK, Tenn. - The "Comeback Kids" couldn't quite finish the job tonight, as the attempted rally by the Smokies fell just short, evening the series with Chattanooga 2-2.
Pete Crow-Armstrong started the scoring for Tennessee in the first inning, as he was driven in by Hadyn McGeary after stealing third. Crow-Armstrong and Luis Vasquez double-stole bases in the inning, trying to set an aggressive tone for the rest of the night.
While Starter Porter Hodge continued to pitch a no-hitter into the third, BJ Murray tripled down the first-base line to score McGeary all the way from first to give the Smokies the 2-0 lead.
Hodge's no-hitter ended in the fifth inning with a single by Chatanooga's Nicholas Northcut. With the bases loaded in the same inning, Hodge hit Jacob Hurtubies to walk in the Lookout's first run of the night. Northcut then scored on a sacrifice fly to deep center field by Noelvi Marte, the sliding catch was made by Cole Roederer but could not get the throw in on time.
A bases-clearing triple by Alex McGarry gave the Lookouts their first lead of the night, and thus ended the night for Porter Hodge and brought in RHP Chris Kachmar in relief. A stand-up double by Rece Hinds that went off the glove of Owen Caissie at the right field wall brought in McGarry from third to extend Nooga's lead to 6-2.
A 2-run sac-fly by Caissie scored Crow-Armstrong and Vasques to pump life into the Smokies and narrow Chattanooga's lead to 6-4 after seven.
Jordan Nwogu chopped away at the lead in the eighth with a sac fly to deep right field that brought in Pablo Aliendo from third and inching closer to the Lookouts, 6-5.
Chattanooga tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth thanks to a bases-loaded sac fly to deep center field that scored McAfee from third. The Smokies' rally came up short as a 4-3 double play ended the game.
The series continues tomorrow night (6/3) at 7:00 PM EDT for Elvis night! Smokies Stadium is celebrating the King of Rock and Roll Smokies style. One lucky family of four will win a trip to Graceland Mansion, the home of Elvis Presley. A variety of Elvis impersonators representing the many eras of Elvis will be roaming the concourse and taking pictures with fans. Enjoy themed music and in-between-inning entertainment all night long. Specialty jerseys, worn by the players, will be auctioned off following the game. The night will end with an Elvis-themed postgame firework show and a tribute concert performed by Ultimate Elvis.
