
Smokies Blow Early Lead to Rocket City, 7-5

Kodak, Tenn. - The Tennessee Smokies (39-34, 2-2) let a three-run lead get away from them Friday night at Smokies Stadium, as they fell to the Rocket City Trash Pandas (43-30, 2-2) 7-5. The Smokies lead 3-0 entering the sixth inning before Rocket City rallied for seven runs over the final four frames.
Rocket City's first five batters in the sixth inning all reached base and came around to score against Chris Clarke, who surrendered five runs in a no decision. The Smokies tied the game in the seventh on Matt Mervis' solo home run, but the Trash Pandas jumped ahead in the eighth with a bases-loaded walk off Bryan King (L, 0-2) and never looked back.
Mervis, Bradlee Beesley, Jake Slaughter and Alexander Canario all finished with multiple hits despite the loss, and Slaughter became the third Smokie to hit double-digit homers when went deep in the fifth inning.
The Smokies will play the fifth game of the series with Rocket City Saturday night at Smokies Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m. ET when the Smokies send RHP Ryan Jensen (0-1, 3.70 ERA) to the mound against RHP Coleman Crow (5-2, 2.82 ERA). Smokies Stadium will host a special Independence Day Weekend Celebration Friday, July 1 through Sunday, July 3, with fireworks set to take place after each game all weekend and Independence Day themed jerseys on Sunday.
