Smith Returns from Disabled List

Infielder Marquez Smith will be activated from the disabled list tonight and rejoin the Iowa Cubs for its 7:05 p.m. series opener against Oklahoma City at Principal Park. Smith missed nearly two months after being placed on the DL June 26th due to a left-hand injury he sustained in the June 24th game against Memphis. In a related moves, catcher Carlos Romero has been reassigned to Mesa and Welington Castillo will rejoin the team after being away due to the birth of his child.

Smith returns to Iowa from Arizona where he rehabbed and played in one game with the rookie-level club. He went 1-for-4 with a run scored in the Cubs' August 10th game against the AZL Rangers. In 66 games with Iowa this season, Smith was batting .283 with 15 doubles, six home runs, 31 RBI and 39 runs scored.

In his first year at Triple-A last year, Smith batted .314 with 26 doubles, 17 home runs and 53 RBI. Post All-Star break, he hit at a .347 clip which ranked fifth in the PCL and second on the team to Micah Hoffpauir (.377).
