San Angelo Colts News Release
San Angelo, Texas - The San Angelo Colts saw their three-game winning streak come to an end as four unearned runs paced the Coastal Bend Thunder to a 7-5 victory at Foster Field on Thursday night.
Coastal Bend got things started in the first inning as a double by third baseman Leivi Ventura scored right fielder Mike Goss to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead. However, the Colts would even things up in the second as catcher Tyler Goodro would single in right fielder Adam Hale to make it 1-1.
The Thunder would then take control by scoring the game's next six runs, four of which were unearned. Manny Mejia got things started by drilling his second homer of the year, a solo shot over the left-center field wall, to give the Thunder a 2-1 lead. Coastal Bend broke the game open in the fifth by scoring three unearned runs thanks to two Colt errors. Centerfielder Dustin Smith and Mejia, each had RBI singles while first baseman Brian Nichols added an RBI groundout to stake the Thunder to a 5-1 advantage. They added two more in the sixth on a two-run single by Smith to make the score 7-1.
The Colts tried to rally by scoring three runs in the sixth on an RBI double by left fielder Jason Crosland, an RBI single by catcher Tyler Goodro, and a bases-loaded walk to second baseman John Wagle to make the count 7-4. San Angelo added another run in the eighth as Wagle hit a SAC fly, but that was as close as the Colts got. Closer Celson Polanco came on for the Thunder and recorded the final five outs to preserve the win.
Smith led the way for the Thunder by going 2-5 with a run and three RBI while Mejia went 2-4 with a homerun and two RBI. Goodro went 3-4 with a run and two RBI to lead the Colt cause. Frank James (2-0) got the win for Coastal Bend going 5.1 innings while allowing eight hits, four runs, all earned, three walks and five strikeouts. Aaron Cunningham (0-1), who was signed hours before the game, took the loss for the Colts after allowing five runs (only two earned), on five hits in 4.1 innings of work while striking out five. Jared Sutton got a big hold for the Thunder after striking out designated hitter Jason Landreth with the bases loaded in the sixth and Coastal Bend clinging to a 7-4 lead.
The Colts and Thunder will meet in game three of their four-game series tomorrow beginning at 7:05. Chace Vacek (0-1, 13.50 ERA) will take the mound for San Angelo against Alec Shepard (0-0, 4.50 ERA) of Coastal Bend.
