Utah Blaze News Release
SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah Blaze announce the signing of three players: defensive lineman GARRETT SMITH (6-3, 285, Utah), offensive lineman MYNIYA SMITH (6-7, 327, Southern University) and defensive back KEVIN ADAMS (6-0, 190, Minnesota State). Terms of the contracts were not disclosed due to team policy.
"We continue to add a lot of depth," said Blaze head coach and general manager DANNY WHITE. "All three of these guys are extremely athletic, and it should make for an interesting training camp."
Garrett Smith re-signs after a year with the Utah Blaze. During the 2006 season, Smith played in six games, recorded 4.5 tackles and forced one fumble. He attended the University of Utah where he was a two-time First-Team All-MWC defensive lineman. The former Ute played from 1998-2002 and started 31 games in his career. During the 2002 season, Smith recorded 38.0 tackles, five stops for losses and three pass deflections.
Myniya Smith joins the Blaze for his first season with the AFL. The former Jaguar was one of the last cuts for the New York Giants in July 2005. During his senior season at Southern, the AFL rookie logged 37 consecutive starts at left tackle and was awarded with First-Team All-Conference honors. Smith allowed only two sacks in 2003 and 2004 and served as a 2004 team captain.
Kevin Adams also comes to the Blaze for his first AFL season. During his 2005 senior season, the former golden eagle totaled 67.0 tackles, 11 passes defended and three interceptions. Adams was also given First-Team All-Conference honors.
In other moves, the Blaze waived lineman Scott Pospisil and Doug Kaufusi.
The Utah Blaze were winners of the 2006 Commissioner's Award, given to the Arena Football League's Organization of the Year, and the Best Support Staff Award. The Blaze led the AFL in attendance and qualified for the postseason in just their first season. Season tickets for the 2007 are now available by logging onto www.utahblaze.com or by calling the Blaze ticket office at (801) 257-3111.
