Smith and Hereaud Lead Roadrunners to Victory

EDINBURG, Texas--- Stantrel Smith and Carlos Hereaud combined for five hits and five RBI as they led the way for the Edinburg Roadrunners as they defeated the Abilene Prairie Dogs 10-1 Saturday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

That was plenty of run support for Matison Smith (1-0) who allowed one run in six innings scattering four hits with seven strikeouts.

The Roadrunners (2-2) got the scoring started in the bottom of the third. Stantrel Smith led off the inning with a single and then stole second base. After moving to third on a ground ball, Smith came in to score on a fielding error making it 1-0 Edinburg.

In the top of the fourth, Abilene (2-2) tied things at one with an RBI double by Kyle Nichols that scored Jason Martin from second.

Edinburg answered back in the bottom of the fourth against Abilene starter Ben Tootle (0-1). Osiel Flores, who started the inning with a walk, came in to score on an RBI fielder's choice by Blue. Stantrel Smith then followed with an RBI single that scored Wilmer Pino from third giving the Roadrunners the 3-1 lead.

An RBI single by Stantrel Smith and a three-run home run by Hereaud made it 7-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning for Edinburg.

The scoring continued in the bottom of the seventh when bases loaded walks to Cristobal Santana and Tim Battle allowed Blue and Stantrel Smith to score. Osiel Flores delivered an RBI single with the bases loaded that allowed Hereaud to score extending the Roadrunners lead 10-1.

Stantrel Smith finished the night 4-for-6 with two RBI and three stolen bases.

Rusty Jones kept the Prairie Dogs off the board in three innings of relief while allowing just one hit and striking out two earning his first save of the season.

The Roadrunners start a four-game series with the Rio Grande Valley Whitewings tomorrow night at Harlingen Field. The first two games will be played in Harlingen and then both teams will close out the series with the final two games at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
