San Angelo Colts News Release
San Angelo, Texas --- Starter Ryan Riddle (1-0) struck out five, and allowed just two runs through six innings to lead the San Angelo Colts to an 8-2 victory over the McAllen Thunder Saturday night at Foster Field. The win gives the Colts a sweep in the first series of the season.
McAllen scored two runs in the first inning, but the Colts pitching was lights out after that.
Thunder second baseman Antoin Gray hit a one-out single, and two batters later, designated hitter Brian Nichols smashed a home run into left-centerfield. McAllen sustained its 2-0 lead into the bottom of the third.
Centerfielder Ronnie Gaines started a two-out rally in the third inning with a single and a stolen base. Right fielder J.J. Sherrill then drew a walk, and first baseman Daryl Jones followed with a two-run double.
An RBI single by shortstop Landon Camp gave the Colts a lead they never relinquished.
Righty Stephen Nikonchik relieved Riddle in the seventh inning and was masterful. Nikonchik pitched two perfect innings and recorded three strikeouts. Lefty Kyle Boggio followed Nikonchik with a 1-2-3 ninth. Riddle, Nikonchik and Boggio combined to retire the last 12 Thunder in a row.
McAllen starter Quinn Bright (0-1) allowed five runs, three earned, on seven hits in five innings and suffered the loss.
The Colts begin a four-game, home and home series against the Abilene Prairie Dogs Sunday at 6:05 p.m. at Foster Field. Righty Chad Nading will start for the Colts opposite fellow righthander Woods Fines for Abilene. It will be Senior Night and Stress Ball Giveaway Night, sponsored by Faith In Action. Seniors 65 and older can get free tickets to the game, and the first 1,000 fans will get a stress ball, courtesy of Faith In Action. Gates open at 5:05 p.m.
