Fort Worth Cats News Release

Fort Worth, Texas--The Fort Worth Cats defeated the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings 5-4 on Saturday night at LaGrave Field in Fort Worth, TX. The Cats win the opening season series 3-1.

Starting pitcher Tim Haines picked up the win in six and two-thirds innings. Haines allowed four runs on four hits, gave up four walks, and struck out one. Luis Chirinos suffered the loss for the WhiteWings in a short, four inning outing. Chirinos also allowed four runs while giving up eight hits and two walks. Chirinos struck out five Cats.

The other half of the Cats' battery, catcher Derek Marshall, supplied most of the offensive support for Haines going 3-for-4 with two runs batted in. Designated hitter Chuck Caufield was also responsible for two Cats' runs. Caufield's only hit was a crucial two-run single that put the Cats on top in the third inning. The Cats would hold on to that lead despite a rally by the WhiteWings in the seventh inning that cut Fort Worth's deficit to one run.

Right fielder Francisco Santana started off the seventh inning rally with a sacrifice fly that allowed first baseman Nick Lenzendorf to tag up to make the game 5-3. Second baseman Ernesto Manzarillo, despite going 0-for-5 cut the two run deficit in half with a fielder's choice that brought in third baseman Bryan Marquez.

The Cats' bullpen was lights out against the WhiteWings, only allowing one hit in 2 1/3 innings of relief between T.J. Bozeman and Jeff Jamnik. Jamnik picked up his second save of the season.

The Cats begin their next series Sunday against the McAllen Thunder who dropped their first five games of the season to the San Angelo Colts. First pitch is at 6:05 p.m. CST. You can buy your tickets online at www.fwcats.com and by phone at (817) 332-CATS.
