Worcester Bravehearts News Release
WORCESTER, Mass. - In a battle of aces Worcester Bravehearts starter Kyle Slinger and Torrington Titans starter Connor Landers did not disappoint.
Both pitchers went eight innings despite allowing a run to score in the first inning. However, Slinger got the win and improved to 3""2 after giving up only two hits and striking out seven. After surrendering an RBI single in the first inning, the Tufts University sophomore retired 21 straight batters and forced 12 ground ball outs.
In the fourth inning, Landers gave up a single to Worcester second baseman Dylan Harris and balked on the next at bat to put him on second base. With two outs and Harris on third, Landers threw a pitch off to the right of Torrington catcher Timothy Budd. Harris took off on the passed ball, but as Budd recovered and dove toward the plate, Harris lifted his feet around the tag to score the eventual game-winning run.
The Bravehearts got their first run on a sacrifice fly by third baseman Mark DeYoung in the first inning, which scored center fielder Ian Strom.
The Titans got the tying run on third base in the top of the ninth inning, but Suffolk University pitcher and Bravehearts reliever Josh Desai got three strikeouts to close the door on Torrington's rally and collect his second save of the season.
The 21""15 Bravehearts will travel north to face the Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide at 7 p.m. July 19 at The Ball Park in Old Orchard Beach, Maine.
