Sliders Swept In Father's Day Doubleheader

After a rainout last night, the Springfield Sliders and Quincy Gems played two seven inning contests today in Quincy, IL with Quincy winning the first game 5-3 and the second game 13-7. The Sliders scored first in game one with RF Ryan Aper driving in a run with a double and then scoring later in the inning after a single by C Matt Stevens and a Quincy error. In the bottom of the inning, Quincy took the lead after 3B Nick Day hit a three-run homer off of Bryce Sablotny. The Gems would get insurance runs in the fourth and the sixth to bring their lead to 5-2 heading into the seventh. In the top of the 7th, DH David Kerian lead off with a double and scored a run to make it 5-3. With two outs, SS Michael Hurwitz was hit by a pitch and CF Wade Rothermich singled to put the tying runs on for LF Mike Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald put a charge into one, but it was caught in deep center field to end the game and seal the Sliders' game one fate. In game two, CF Wade Rothermich hit a solo home run to put the Sliders in front early but the Gems answered with two to take the lead at 2-1 after one inning. DH David Kerian hit a two-run shot in the second to briefly give the Sliders a 3-2 lead, but again Quincy answered in the bottom of the inning and led 5-3 after two. C Matt Stevens hit a three-run HR to put Springfield back into the lead and Rothermich added an RBI double to give the Sliders a 7-5 lead, as the Sliders scored in each of the first four innings. Quincy would tie things with two in the fourth inning, and then explode for six in the fifth to blow the game open. From there the Sliders were shut down by the Gems' bullpen. The Sliders are off tomorrow but will be back in action at Robin Roberts Stadium on Tuesday as they welcome the Terre Haute Rex for the first of a two game series. First pitch is set for 6:35, and the game will be broadcast on the Springfield Sliders' Ustream channel.
The Springfield Sliders are members of the Prospect League, playing at historic Robin Roberts Stadium. The Sliders are members of the Western Division along with the Danville (IL) Dans, DuBois County (IN) Bombers, Hannibal (MO) Cavemen, Quincy (IL) Gems, and Terre Haute (IN) Rex.
