Bombers Blow Late Lead, Lose 3-2 in 10

June 17, 2012 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Dubois County Bombers News Release

For the second time on a long three-game road trip, the Dubois County Bombers will go home with a loss after entering the final inning with a lead.

This time they lost to the Danville Dans 3-2 in 10 innings at Danville Stadium in Danville, Ill.

Nick Green, working his third full inning of relief for Bombers starter Taylor Luna, could not close the game. With the Bombers leading 2-0 entering the bottom of the ninth, Danville designated hitter Max Homick led off with a double that diving Dubois County center fielder Austin Nyman could not hang on to.

Dans third baseman Bradley Roney singled into left field, as did centerfielder Chris Newcomb, driving in Homick to trim the deficit to 2-1.

After a Casey Fletcher sacrifice bunt, Dans shortstop Wes Minton lofted a fly ball to center that scored Roney. Green would strike out catcher Evan Powell with the winning run on third base and two outs.

After a scoreless top of the tenth, Nick Smart came on to pitch for Dubois County. He issued a leadoff walk to Danville first baseman Adam Casson, and then second baseman Tyler Fullerton bunted in an attempt to sacrifice Casson to second.

Inexplicably, Smart threw to second, and both runners were safe. To make matters worse, he bobbled the next sacrifice attempt, this one by Danville left fielder Drew Hacker, and allowed him to reach base as well.

Now the bases were loaded with no one out, and the Bombers drew everyone in.

Homick, who had scored the Dans' first run the previous inning, lofted a fly ball to shallow left field. Bombers left fielder Landon Curry caught on the run and fired home, forcing Casson to stay put at third.

But the throw sailed, and catcher Chris Tavares could not make the leaping catch as it skittered behind him and bounced far enough away that Smart, who was backing up the play, could not get to it before Casson raced home with the winning run.

It was an odd end to a game that had been played so cleanly. Bombers starter Taylor Luna and Dans starter Andrew Alvarez engaged in a pitchers' duel that saw five scoreless innings.

The Bombers scored in the top of the sixth. Austin Nyman singled, was sacrificed to second by Curry and went to third on second baseman Frank Rawdow's single.

Rouleaux lined a single to right that Fletcher could not catch, and Nyman scored. Rawdow took third and Rouleaux second on Fletcher's poor throw back to the infield. 1-0, Bombers.

Then, Rawdow was caught too far off third base on a Cody Daily groundball to third, but he stayed in the rundown long enough to allow Rouleaux to reach third. Rouleaux then scored as Alvarez balked to put the Bombers up 2-0.

Alvarez left after the sixth inning.

Luna exited in the sixth inning with two runners on and two down. Green relieved him and, after walking his first batter, struck out Roney to end the threat. Green would work a scoreless seventh and eighth innings before unraveling in the ninth.

In all, it was a disappointing end to a tiring road trip for Dubois County. They split two games against the Gems in Quincy, including a disappointing game they dropped Thursday night after leading 6-1 entering the bottom of the ninth.

The Bombers host the Dans Sunday at 6:15 p.m. at League Stadium in Huntingburg, Ind. To celebrate Father's Day, all fathers are allowed general admission tickets for one dollar.
