Sliders Lose Battle Of Bullpens To Terre Haute

June 19, 2012 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Springfield Sliders News Release

Neither starting pitcher was very effective tonight in the 7-6 win for the Terre Haute Rex over the Springfield Sliders at Robin Roberts Stadium. It started with Sliders' starter Adam Peters who gave up four runs in the very first inning and was removed after that. In the bottom of the first, the Sliders answered with five of their own off of Terre Haute's Kyle Zimmerman. The first two runs scored on an error by Terre Haute, and then the Sliders' LF Mike Fitzgerald and C Matt Stevens hit back to back home runs to put Springfield in front 5-4. Terre Haute would then tie the game in the second off of reliever John White. White pitched four innings and gave up two runs, but despite his good relief effort, he was saddled with the loss because the Sliders' offense went mostly quiet after the first inning. They loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth, but failed to score when 1B Matt Tellor struck out. With the game 7-5 Rex in the eighth inning, the Sliders pulled one back on a pinch hit RBI triple by Ryan Aper. After the Terre Haute throw to third to try and throw him out went awry, Aper then tried to score on the play to tie it up but was thrown out, squandering the Sliders' best chance to tie it in the late innings. From there, Terre Haute closer Nick Blount would shut the Sliders down to earn the save. The Sliders and Rex will conclude this two game series tomorrow at Robin Roberts Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:35, and the game will be broadcast on the Springfield Sliders' Ustream channel.

The Springfield Sliders are members of the Prospect League, playing at historic Robin Roberts Stadium. The Sliders are members of the Western Division along with the Danville (IL) Dans, DuBois County (IN) Bombers, Hannibal (MO) Cavemen, Quincy (IL) Gems, and Terre Haute (IN) Rex.
