Bombers Rally, Win Thriller 7-6 over Quincy

Dubois County Bombers News Release

Bombers catcher Kolin Conner has shown some power this year, but two of his biggest hits this year barely were somewhat mishit as his at bats resulted in the tying and winning runs in a 7-6 10-inning win for Dubois County over the Quincy Gems Tuesday night at League Stadium in Huntingburg, Ind.

Nick Green earned the win after pitching a scoreless ninth and tenth inning while Bronson Smith lost as he his first earned run of the season in the bottom of the tenth.

Conner came to the plate with the bases loaded and no outs in the tenth and chopped the first pitch from Smith up the middle and past Gems shortstop Nick Moore. Jeff Zahn, who had led off with a single, crossed home with the winning run.

Conner was also involved in the play that forced the game into extras.

In the bottom of the eighth, with Quincy leading 5-4, Dubois County shortstop Frank Rawdow worked a one-out walk and stole second. After right fielder Scott Windler struck out, Conner poked one off the end of his bat that rolled roughly twenty-five feet down the first-base line.

Gems pitcher Charlie Kapala fielded it and fired it wide of first baseman Zach George for an error, and Rawdow scored. Conner pulled into second, safe with an infield single.

The matchup of the first-place Bombers and second-place Gems lived up to its hype and its precedents: Quincy had a walk-off 7-6 win last Thursday, and the Bombers won 2-1 the next night.

Spencer Sapp started for Dubois County and worked four and two-thirds innings. He allowed four runs - two earned - although three came in a second inning that saw the Bombers botch two probable double plays.

Kurt Kudrecki relieved him and threw two and one-third innings, allowing one earned run. Nick Smart pitched the eighth, and he, too allowed an earned run.

For the Gems, starter Zac Pearman went five and a third, allowing five runs (four earned). Kapala came on and would go two and two-thirds, but could not hold the lead as Conner's first bit of luck prevailed.

Dubois County improved to 15-4, three games ahead of Quincy (12-7). The two clash again Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. at League Stadium.
