Sliders Fall For 2nd Straight Day To Hot Hitting Dans
July 4, 2012 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Springfield Sliders News Release
The Springfield Sliders lost their Independence Day game to the Danville Dans 9-2 tonight at Robin Roberts Stadium. In the bottom of the first inning, 2B Michael Hurwitz led off with a single for the Sliders and things looked like they were starting off well after JD Dozier, making his first start for the Sliders, threw a scoreless first inning. However, the home plate umpire, Eric Harmon, called Hurwitz out and ejected him and Sliders' manager Pete Romero because Hurwitz used an illegal two piece bat. When a player uses an illegal bat, the manager is also automatically ejected, hence the Romero ejection. After that, the Dans picked up where they left off last night, scoring one run in the second and another in the third. They made it 4-0 with two more runs in the fifth, before the Sliders would get their first run. The Sliders got that first run in the bottom of the fifth inning when 2B David Kerian, Hurwitz's replacement, picked up an RBI single. Later in the inning, the Sliders had the bases loaded with two out, but failed to score as LF Mike Fitzgerald grounded out to end the frame. The Dans answered Springfield's first run with three in the top of the sixth. Springfield made it 7-2 when 1B Matt Tellor hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh to score SS Matt Highland, but again Danville got the run right back, this time off of Sliders' reliever TR Dunne. Danville's final run of the night came on a solo home run in the ninth by 2B Andrew Daniel. In the bottom of the eighth, after two straight Sliders struck out looking on calls they disagreed with, the home plate umpire came over to calm the Sliders' dugout down, and he ended up ejecting reserve C Connor Dunn for arguing about balls and strikes. By Prospect League rules, the first time anyone is ejected, he is suspended for one game, so Hurwitz, Dunn, and Romero will all be suspended for tomorrow's series opener against Dubois County. First pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 6:35 and the game will be broadcast on the Springfield Sliders' Ustream channel.
The Springfield Sliders are members of the Prospect League, playing at historic Robin Roberts Stadium. The Sliders are members of the Western Division along with the Danville (IL) Dans, DuBois County (IN) Bombers, Hannibal (MO) Cavemen, Quincy (IL) Gems, and Terre Haute (IN) Rex.
