Springfield Sliders News Release
The Springfield Sliders ended the first half of the 2012 Prospect League season with an 11-6 win at Hannibal tonight. The Sliders scored the game's first fun in the second inning when 1B Reagan Fowler hit into a fielder's choice, scoring RF Wade Rothermich from third. After Sliders' starter Ryan Aper stranded a lead-off triple in the second, Springfield would make it 2-0 in the third on an RBI single by LF Mike Fitzgerald with two outs in the inning. Hannibal would pull one back in the bottom of the third, but Springfield had an answer of their own in the top of the fourth. The Sliders scored four runs to make it 6-1, scoring all four runs with two outs. In the inning, SS Michael Hurwitz, 2B David Kerian, and DH Jake Ingold hit back to back to back RBI singles, and Hurwitz scored on wild pitch. Aper struggled with his command in the fifth inning, allowing Hannibal to cut the lead to 6-3, but that's as close as the Cavemen would get and Aper would last long enough for his first win of the season. The Sliders broke open in the game in the top of the seventh, when they would score five runs. It started with a bomb of a home run from Fitzgerald, his team-leading eighth of the year. C Matt Stevens reached on an error, 3B Sean Gerber singled, Fowler singled to score Stevens, CF Jake Bergren hit a two run triple to bring in both Gerber and Fowler, and then Hurwitz hit a sacrifice fly to score Bergren. Hannibal made it a little closer with a run in the eighth and two more in the ninth off of Springfield's bullpen, but they never seriously threatened the Sliders' lead. With the win, the Sliders have won 7 of their last 11 games, seemingly heating up just in time for the second half. The Sliders are off tomorrow, and then begin the second half of the season Tuesday at Danville. The game will start at 6:30 and be broadcast on the Sliders' Ustream channel.
The Springfield Sliders are members of the Prospect League, playing at historic Robin Roberts Stadium. The Sliders are members of the Western Division along with the Danville (IL) Dans, DuBois County (IN) Bombers, Hannibal (MO) Cavemen, Quincy (IL) Gems, and Terre Haute (IN) Rex.
