Sliders Can't Hold Late Lead And Fall In Extras To Rex

August 3, 2012 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Springfield Sliders News Release

After the start was delayed by an hour due to storms in the area, the Springfield Sliders and Terre Haute Rex did get in tonight's game, with the Rex coming out on top 11-7 in twelve innings at Robin Roberts Stadium. For the second straight night, the Rex scored first as they turned a lead-off triple into the game's first run in the very first inning. The Sliders took the lead from the Rex in the second inning, when a couple of Terre Haute errors allowed the Sliders to score four. 1B Reagan Fowler and 3B David Kerian both scored on the second of the Terre Haute errors, and then 2B Michael Hurwitz had an RBI groundout and LF Wade Rothermich had an RBI single to score the other two runs. In the fourth, the Rex would edge closer, as they picked up two to cut the lead to 4-3. The game stayed that way until the Sliders added a run to their lead in the seventh when Fowler hit an RBI single, and another run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by DH Matt Tellor to take a three run lead into the ninth. The Sliders' bullpen could not hold the lead however, allowing the Rex to score four runs, all with two outs, to take a one run lead. The Sliders rallied though in the bottom of the ninth, on an infield single by SS Matt Highland, forcing the game to go extra innings. Both teams were held scoreless in the tenth and eleventh innings, despite both having chances. The Rex then exploded for four runs in the top of the twelfth, and kept the Sliders off the board in the bottom of the twelfth to pick up the victory. The Sliders and Rex will conclude their two game series tomorrow at 6:35 here at Robin Roberts Stadium.
