Carolina Courage News Release

Morrisville, NC (June 12, 2003) - The Carolina Courage's Danielle Slaton, the 2002 WUSA Defender of the Year, has turned down her spot on the American All-Star roster for the upcoming Hyundai WUSA All-Star Game on June 19 in Cary. Slaton plans to take advantage of the break in a crowded WUSA and National Team schedule in order to expedite her full return from off-season knee surgery. Australian defender Dianne Alagich of the San Jose CyberRays will be forced to decline her invitation for the World All-Star team due to a left knee strain.

In Slaton's absence, WUSA World Stars manager Tom Stone has named Atlanta Beat defender Nancy Augustyniak as a replacement. A three-year starter for Atlanta, Augustyniak has helped to lead the league's stingiest defense to a 0.78 goals against average this season. The 5-foot-5 defender has tallied six assists during her WUSA career. She was named Atlanta's 2002 Defensive Most Valuable Player.

Filling in for Alagich on the World All-Star team is Breanna Boyd, the Courage's first round draft pick in 2003. Boyd, a member of the Canadian national team, is in her first season with Carolina. Boyd has started in all nine matches for the Courage, registering one assist on the season. The 5-foot-8 defender has 43 caps and two goals with Canada.
