
Augustyniak, Boyd All-Star Replacements

ATLANTA (Thursday, June 12 2003) - The Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) today announced that Atlanta Beat defender Nancy Augustyniak and Carolina Courage defender Breanna Boyd will replace All-Star Reserves Danielle Slaton (American Stars) and Dianne Alagich (World Stars) respectively. The 2003 Hyundai WUSA All-Star Game will be televised on ESPN2 on Thursday, June 19 at 7:30 p.m. ET at SAS Stadium and will provide a World Cup preview as all of the top players who are expected to compete in the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup will be in Cary for the three-day event.
A three-year starter for Atlanta, Augustyniak has helped to lead the league's stingiest defense to a 0.78 goals against average this season. The 5-foot-5 defender has tallied six assists during her WUSA career. She was named Atlanta's 2002 Defensive Most Valuable Player. Augustyniak will replace Carolina defender Slaton who has been hampered by a right knee injury during the 2003 season (right knee effusion).
Boyd, a member of the Canadian national team, is in her first season with Carolina. Boyd has started in all nine matches for the Courage, registering one assist on the season. The 5-foot-8 defender has 43 caps and two goals with Canada. Boyd will replace San Jose defender Alagich who has missed most of the 2003 WUSA season due to a left knee sprain.

Approximately 50 WUSA players will compete in the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup in China in September and October. The eight WUSA teams are the Atlanta Beat, Boston Breakers, Carolina Courage, New York Power, Philadelphia Charge, San Diego Spirit, San Jose CyberRays and the Washington Freedom.
