
Slammers Upset First Place Jacksonville 3-1

Pelham, AL. â The Alabama Slammers upset first place Jacksonville by a score of 3-1 Saturday Night at the Pelham Civic Complex. The Slammers, victorious in four of their last five home games, are 13-6-1 at the Pelham Civic Complex this season.
Jamie Ronayne, making his forth start in the last five games, turned away 31 of 32 shots in the win, including 14 of 15 in the third period. Ronayne, this weeks WHA2 goaltender of the week pushed his record to 12-6-2 on the year.
Alabama (21-14-3, 45 points), unbeaten in its last two games (2-0), moves into a tie with Miami for third place and just four points behind first place Jacksonville.
The Slammers took a 1-0 lead on Justin Schabes's 2nd tally in as many games at the 5:00 mark of the opening period. Schabes brought the puck into the Jacksonville zone on right wing and took a quick wrist shot near the face-off dot that beat Jacksonville's Randy Hevey.
After a scoreless second period, Alabama increased its lead to 2-0 at the 11:08 mark of the third period on a goal from defenseman Jorin Welsh. It was Welsh's sixth goal of the season.
Jacksonville got on the board at 17:21 of the third period on a goal by Chad Gromek to bring Jacksonville within one. But the Slammers proved to be too much for Jacksonville to handle on the evening as Doug Lawrence stripped the puck from a Barracudas defender in the last minute of the game when Jacksonville pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker and scored into the empty net to seal the upset victory by a final score of 3-1.
Tomorrow night â Saturday, February 14 â the Slammers host the first place Ba rracudas again in the second of two in a row between the clubs.
