Joliet Slammers News Release

Joliet, IL - The Joliet Slammers presented by ATI Physical Therapy were able to generate offense consistently throughout the game, but ultimately lost to a persistent Miners squad. After forcing the game into extra innings, Southern Illinois won game 3 of the series 7-5.

The Slammers were able to get the bats going early scoring a run in each of the first 3 innings. Shortstop Danny Zardon singled into left in the 1st, scoring the runner from 3rd base making it 1-0. The following inning, right fielder Travis Bolin hit another single to left and brought home Ridge Hoopii-Haslam from 2nd.

In the top of the 3rd, first baseman Justin Garcia slapped an RBI double into the right-center gap to bring home the runner from 2nd, making the lead 3-0.

The Slammers avoided a scare in the top of the 4th, when the Miners had bases loaded, remained scoreless.

During the bottom of the 5th, L.J. Kalawaia hit a single into center field scoring another run for the Slammers. Later in the inning, Garcia would add to his RBI tally with an sacrifice fly to center scoring Kalawaia, stretching the lead to 5-0.

However, the lead would not hold up as the Miners found their offense in the 6th inning. Southern Illinois DH Joe Dudek crossed home on a wild pitch to score their first run of the ballgame. Later, center fielder Corey Dempster doubled into right field to score 2 runners on base closing the gap at 5-3. Next up, second baseman Marc DiLeo singled into right to score Dempster.

No runs were scored again until the Top of the 9th when Dudek hit a single that skipped off the mound for an infield single, scoring the runner at 3rd. The game was now tied at 5.

The game would be settled in extra innings with the national tiebreaker regulation. Chris Scura would hit a single into left field and score 2 runs giving the Miners the lead. The Slammers were unable to score any runs in the bottom half of the 11th and would fall 7-5.

Today's Merchants and Manufacturers Player of the Game goes to Danny Zardon for his impressive work in the field and a 3-6 performance with 1 RBI.

The Slammers remain at home on Tuesday against Washington at 7:05v p.m.
