Joliet Slammers News Release
JOLIET, IL- The Joliet Slammers were recognized as the 2016 Business of the Year at the Grundy Economic Development Council (GEDC) and Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner held at the Morris Country Club last Wednesday, March 9. More than 270 business leaders and guests attended the event where area businesses, entrepreneurs and organizations were awarded for their contributions to the community.
Grundy County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Christina Van Yperen explained that the Business of the Year award is given to a Grundy County Chamber member who has grown their business and worked to make a difference in Grundy County.
"It's an honor to be given this award," said Slammers General Manager Heather Mills. "We greatly appreciate the support we receive from Grundy County businesses and residents."
The Slammers were applauded at Wednesday's event for making strides in spreading their brand beyond Joliet, particularly through community nights at the ballpark. The Slammers have 12 community nights on the schedule already for 2016, including nights for Morris, Seneca and Coal City, with the goal of adding more.
Community nights at Silver Cross Field involve inviting the town's mayor out for a first pitch, working with local service organizations to raise funds for area nonprofits and often the National Anthem and pre-game activities are performed by local talent.
About 1,000 residents have attended the Morris Community Nights over the past four years.
"The teamwork of the Slammers, the city and villages, the service clubs, local police and fire departments and the Chamber have turned the event into a family tradition," Van Yperen said Wednesday night.
In addition, the Slammers were recognized for impacting the Grundy County region through participation in Grundy County festivals, Business After Hours events, expos, and the Spikes Super Students reading program done in conjunction with the University of Saint Francis. Hundreds of tickets are donated annually through the program to participating schools across both Will and Grundy counties. Game tickets are used as incentives for students to reach educational goals set by their schools.
Slammers Director of Community Relations Ken Miller accepted the award on behalf of the organization. Miller, a Coal City resident, was instrumental in rallying both Slammers players and employees to help clean up the aftermath following the Coal City tornado last summer. Miller can often be seen accompanying Slammers mascots Spikes and J.L. Bird to community events year round.
