Friday night's game of the City of Champions Cup showcased the Chicago Deep Dish and Joliet Slammers. After a 13-0 blowout loss to the Nerds Herd last night, the Deep Dish looked to get back on track against the red-hot Slammers. There wasn't a lot of hitting in tonight's game with only 7 hits, but walks and capitalizing on opportunities separated the two teams tonight.

The Slammer's Andrew Shaps led off the bottom of the 2nd with an infield single, and stole second base. Jordan Procyshen promptly hit a single into left field that drove in Shaps. Two batters, Zac Taylor hit a cap-shot to the second baseman and scored Procyshen to put the Slammers ahead 2-0.

In the bottom of the 3rd inning, The Slammers were able to take advantage of some early Deep Dish miscues to scratch across another run. Harrison Moore stole second after a leadoff walk. A few pitches later, Korry Howell hit a ground ball to Jack Strunc at short. A throwing error allowed Moore to score to make it 3-0 Slammers. Deep Dish pitcher Christian Griffin settled down and struck out the side to end the inning.

The Deep Dish had a chance to get on the board in the top of the 4th. Andre Nnebe reached base on an error, and advanced to second. Slammer's Will Headen got the Deep Dish to ground out twice to end the inning, and leave the Deep Dish without a run on the board.

There wasn't too much action after that inning until the bottom of the 6th. A quick burst of energy from Slammer's three-hole hitter Zach Kirtley, who smashed a solo shot to the patio area in left field. The Slammers added to their lead going into the backend of the game up 4-0.

The Deep Dish had a glimpse of hope in the top of the 7th inning after Andre Nnebe hit a leadoff double down the left field line. Headen shut the door again on the Deep Dish with two consecutive strikeouts and a popup to shallow center field. Headen exited the game after seven scoreless innings, allowing only two hits with five strikeouts.

The Slammers added two runs at the expense of the Deep Dish's misfortune. A catcher's interference call, a walk, and hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for the Slammers with no outs. A wild pitch and throwing error scored two runs to make it 6-0 Slammers. The Slammers added one more run in the 8th inning. The Slammers won tonight's game by a score of 7-0.

If there is one thing to take away from tonight's game is that the Deep Dish bullpen has struggled recently. After Griffin exited in the 6th inning, Deep Dish pitchers walked five batters, and gave more two free passes to Slammer's hitters.

The Deep Dish (1-4) play in tomorrow's afternoon game against the Nerds Herd (1-2) at 1:05pm. The Slammers (3-1) will be the away team in the evening matchup against the Tully Monsters at 6:05pm.

Box Score Recap:

Deep Dish - 0 runs, 3 hits, 4 errors, 4 runners left on base.

Slammers - 7 runs, 4 hits, 1 error, 7 runners left on base.

WP - Will Headen (1-1)

Tonight's Merchants and Manufacturer's Bank Player of the Game is: Slammer's LHP Will Headen - 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 5 K's.
