Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
The Colorado Springs Sky Sox defeated the Salt Lake Bees by the score of 6-2 on Wednesday night at Security Service Field as 3,291 fans saw the Sox snap their three-game losing streak. Their win over the Bees cut their magic number to clinch the division to nine and it could drop to eight if Tacoma were to lose tonight to Portland.
The Sky Sox got the scoring started in the third when Christian Colonel doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on a sac fly by catcher Paul Phillips. Salt Lake tied things up in the top of the fourth on a bases loaded walk by reliever Damian Moss (8-3) but would be held in check from there.
Phillips singled and scored in the fifth and Colonel doubled in Kenny Perez in the sixth to stake the Sox to a 3-1 lead and chase starting pitcher Sean O'Sullivan (6-4). Three more insurance runs crossed the plate in the eighth for the Sox on a sac fly by Perez, an RBI single by Colonel and another sac fly by Mike McCoy. The scoring wrapped up in the ninth when the Bees' Sean Rodriguez hit a solo homer off Matt Belisle.
Kurt Birkins started the game for the Sox and struck out five of the first six batters of the game but had to leave the contest after the end of the second inning with a right leg injury. Moss came on to relieve Birkins and picked up the win after working three innings and giving up just one run on two hits. O'Sullivan took the loss after surrendering three runs on seven hits in six frames. Belisle tossed the final two innings for Colorado Springs to notch his sixth save.
Game two of the five-game series is set for a 6:05 PM start tomorrow night with RH Esmil Rogers (1-4, 6.85) on the hill for the Sox versus RH Brad Salmon (5-4, 5.22). As a special treat for fans, the Sky Sox will be opening the gates at 3:15 PM tomorrow afternoon so that fans can watch the Sox taking batting practice.
