Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
The Colorado Springs Sky Sox exploded on offense Thursday night beating the Sacramento River Cats by a score of 14-4 in front of 1,764 fans at Security Service Field.
Sky Sox starting center fielder Carlos Gonzalez was the big story on the night putting on quite a show for everyone going 5-for-6 with five RBI and two triples. The Sky Sox, as a team, put up a season-high 21 total hits, and every starter had an RBI on the night except for starting catcher Paul Phillips. The Sox got things started in the second inning when Jonathan Herrera grounded out to bring home Christian Colonel. Eric Young Jr. would follow with an RBI of his own, on the next at-bat, driving in Phillips on a single to right giving the Sky Sox a 2-0 lead.
The hit parade was on for the Sox after the second inning. The Sky Sox would go on to score two runs in the third and fourth innings extending their lead to 6-1. Gonzalez drove in his first run on the night in the fourth when he doubled in Mike McCoy, he would go on to produce two more RBI in the fifth when he smacked a triple to center. Not quite done yet, Gonzalez drove in two more runs in the seventh giving him his fourth and fifth RBIs on the night and his 27th on the season.
Sacramento starting pitcher Vince Mazzaro (0-1) didn't have a great outing thanks to the lively bats of the Sky Sox. Mazzaro gave up six runs on 12 hits in four innings pitched. His relievers didn't fare much better, giving up a combined eight runs on nine hits.
Alan Johnson (4-0) had a decent outing earning his fourth win in as many starts allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits in five innings of work.
On a night where the Sacramento offense was over shadowed, starting left-fielder Chris Denorfia had a good game belting a home run to left field in the fifth and driving in a run in the seventh on a double giving him two RBI on the night going 2-for-5 at the plate. It looked as if the River Cats were going to rally in the fifth after Denorfia's dinger but they were quieted by Johnson when he got right fielder Sean Doolittle to fly out to Dan Ortmeier in right keeping the score at 6-3.
Jarrett Grube came on the ninth in his first appearance of the season and looked good striking out two and allowing no runs.
Game two will be tomorrow night at 6:05 PM and will feature left-hander Kurt Birkins (0-0, 3.00) for the Sox taking on right-hander Sean Gallagher (0-0, 0.00) of Sacramento.
