Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

For the third straight game, the Colorado Springs Sky Sox rallied to win in their final at bat as the edged the Oklahoma City RedHawks 5-4 on Wednesday evening at Security Service Field in front of 6,877 fans. The victory gave the Sox a 3-1 series victory and moved them to seven games back of division leading Tacoma who lost their eighth straight game.

Oklahoma would pull ahead in the early innings by putting up a run in the first, second and third innings. In the first, Esteban German singled and moved around the bases on a wild pitch and a throwing error by Sox catcher Paul Phillips before scoring on a single by Chris Davis. The Sky Sox tied it up briefly in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by Jonathan Herrera but the RedHawks would pull ahead again in the second. Catcher Max Ramirez doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on a two-out single by German to put Oklahoma City up 2-1. Davis would lead off the third inning with a double as well and came around to score and make it 3-1 on a single by Hernan Iribarren.

The two teams would trade zeros over the next three innings before the RedHawks struck again against Sox reliever Matt Wilhite in the seventh. Craig Gentry started the inning with a triple to right-center field and then trotted home on an RBI single by German who registered his third hit and second RBI of the game.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Sox would start to rally and cut the Oklahoma lead to 4-2 after Chris Nelson led off the inning with a double to right and then moved to third on a long fly ball out by Chris Frey. The next batter Phillips then grounded out to the second baseman to drive in Nelson.

The eighth would see the Sox take the lead for good, with a little help. Reliever Wille Eyre came on in relief of starter Guillermo Moscoso and walked Eric Young Jr. to start the inning. After a lineout by Herrera, Young stole second and then moved to third on a single by Jay Payton. The RedHawks brought on lefty Clay Rapada to pitch to the left-handed Mike Paulk but Sox manager Stu Cole pinch-hit for Paulk with righty Brad Eldred. Eldred then ripped the ball down the third base line where Davis was able to glove the ball and fire to second for an attempted force out of Payton but German's foot was off the bag and everyone was safe and Young scored to make it 4-3. Warren Madrigal then came on to relieve Rapada and struck out Cole Garner for the second out of the inning. Next up stepped Chris Nelson and with a 1-1 count Payton and Eldred moved up to third and second on a double steal to put the go-ahead run in scoring position. Madrigal seemed to get out of the inning when he got Nelson to hit a chopper to German at second but German misplayed the ball and it got away from him and allowed both Payton and Eldred to chug around and score to give the Sox a 5-4 lead.

Edgmer Escalona (2-2), who came on in the eighth, worked a perfect ninth including two strikeouts to shut the door on Oklahoma and pick up the win. The loss went to Clay Rapada (1-2) who gave up a run in no innings of work.

The Sky Sox start an eight-game road trip on Friday as they head to Tennessee to face the Memphis Redbirds. Springs will send LH Kurt Birkins (4-6, 6.11) to face RH P.J. Walters (5-4, 3.81).
